During a particular crossroads in my life earlier this year, I came across the quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” I thought about it deeply and when I awoke one morning, I realized that I could no longer remain in my comfort zone; I had to do something that had genuine meaning and I had to make a difference to other people’s lives.
I had to ‘be the change’ I wanted to see in the world.
The first step
It’s difficult to return to life as usual once you’ve awakened to a higher purpose but it also isn’t easy to know where to start or how to create something that makes a tangible difference. I am sure you’ve been there!
Given that inspirational sayings have always guided me, I decided to help others by creating a Facebook page for daily inspiration, and that’s how Soul Republic came to being.
Despite the hugely positive response and wonderful feeling I received from building a strong community of like-minded individuals on Soul Republic, I knew there was something more that I was called to do and that Soul Republic was just a stepping stone to bigger things.
“The Soul Republic community inspired me to take a leap beyond personal inspiration to social transformation.”
Being a strong-willed entrepreneur from an early age I had always followed my own path but the yearning inside me called for something different.
In the past I’ve ‘gone it alone’ but this time I knew I had to engage as many people as possible with this shared dream of making a difference.
The Soul Republic community inspired me to take a leap beyond personal inspiration to social transformation. This change had come within my own life through education and I understood that the ‘change I wanted to see’ was education for underprivileged children. I wanted children in emerging countries to have the same educational opportunities as children in Australia and I set out to discover what could be done.
I kept asking myself how I could combine my passion for inspiring others with my vision for giving back and I held it in my mind every day on my morning jogs along the beach.
One day, I knew what I wanted to do: I wanted to leave messages in the sand imprinted by the soul of flip-flops or ‘thongs’ as we refer to them in Australia.
In Australia, thongs are iconic and the average Australian has at least 3 pairs each. I figured there couldn’t be a better way of inspiring others than leaving an impression on the sand while simultaneously generating funds to help underprivileged kids receive education.
Once I had my big idea, the universe started conspiring to make it happen. I nervously shared my idea with friends, family and the Soul Republic community and was graced with an overwhelmingly positive response. So I went to work.
I researched how to create the thongs and found that the most viable option was to have them manufactured in China. With no prior experience in manufacturing, I needed help.
The biggest help came from my father. After he questioned my reasons for going back to running a business and felt skeptical about my endeavours, I was honoured that my dad (at 78 years old!) agreed to make the trip to China with me and be my interpreter. I was apprehensive about taking Dad with me but during our travels, I was able to share my desire to do something altruistic, a concept that was somewhat foreign to him.
My father had been sent to Australia at age 16, leaving his family behind. Sadly he never saw them again. Both his parents passed away while he was in Sydney and he didn’t have the money to make the trip back to China for their funeral. His whole life has been about survival. He worked extremely hard to send money back to China while trying to support himself and later his own family. As you can imagine, Dad has always inspired me by instilling in me strong values of hard work, honesty and courage.
It’s little wonder I am now chasing a big dream.
Taking the first step has led me to taking a big leap, the creation of Moeloco. Moeloco is my ‘Crazy Dream’ to create products and events that contribute to the welfare of children and leave a lasting footprint, not only in the sand. I am privileged to share this journey with you and I am humbled that you have chosen to come with me on this journey. In the weeks ahead I can’t wait to share more of the Moeloco story with you.
This is just a taste of things to come.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey, if you enjoyed it be sure to pass it along – sharing is caring!
